Federal and state broadband programs, including the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, are funding fiber networks across the country, including here in Arkansas. Building those networks takes crews who can install, splice and test fiber correctly. For contractors, internet service providers and electric cooperatives, finding enough trained technicians is often the bottleneck.
Why Certified Training Matters
- Quality: poor splicing and dirty connectors lead to failed acceptance tests, rework and truck rolls.
- Documentation: FOA certification gives you a clear record of your crew's verified knowledge and skills.
- Bids and contracts: some projects and customers ask for certified technicians.
- Retention: investing in your people's credentials helps keep them.
A Fast Path for New Hires
New technicians can study fiber fundamentals free at Fiber U, the online learning resource of The Fiber Optic Association, in their own time. Then a 2-day, hands-on CFOT course covers practical skills and the FOA certification exam. That means less time off the job than a multi-week program.
Specialize by Role
- Splicers: CFOS/S splicing
- Testing and acceptance techs: CFOS/T testing and OTDR Fundamentals
- FTTH install crews: CFOS/H fiber to the home
- Construction crews: CFOS/O outside plant
