Students interested in pursuing fiber optic certification are encouraged to begin their training through Fiber U, the online learning resource provided by The Fiber Optic Association (FOA), and then complete hands-on training at an FOA-accredited training facility.
What Is Fiber U?
Fiber U is the FOA's free online learning site. Visit fiberu.org to develop foundational knowledge of fiber optic technology, installation practices, testing, and industry terminology at your own pace.
Which Fiber U Course to Take
- Before our CFOT course: complete the Fiber U CFOT online training.
- Before our CPCT course: the Fiber U Premises Cabling course is recommended.
- Before specialist (CFOS) courses: you will need your CFOT first; the matching Fiber U specialist lessons are a good refresher.
Fiber U Certificate of Completion vs. FOA Certification
A Fiber U certificate of completion shows you finished the online course. It is not itself an FOA professional certification. FOA certification is earned by passing the FOA certification examination and meeting FOA eligibility requirements.
Why Hands-On Training Still Matters
Reading about splicing and testing is not the same as doing it. In class you work with real cable, connectors, fusion splicers, power meters and OTDRs under an instructor who checks your technique.
Your 2-Day Hands-On CFOT at The Fiber Optic Academy
Upon completing the CFOT online training, bring your certificate of completion to our training facility for a two-day, instructor-led, hands-on training course. After successfully completing the required practical training and meeting applicable eligibility requirements, you may take the FOA certification examination. Students who pass the examination and satisfy FOA requirements earn their FOA certification.
Daily hands-on training rate: $299 per student.
Already Working in Fiber?
Experienced technicians with documented fiber optic work experience may qualify for FOA direct certification. See thefoa.org for current requirements, or ask us whether a hands-on class is the better route for you.
