How to Become a Fiber Optic Technician

How to Become a Fiber Optic Technician

Fiber optic technicians install, splice, test and repair the fiber networks behind internet, phone, cable TV and data center connections. Here is the path we recommend to our own students, from free online study to FOA certification.

What Fiber Optic Technicians Do

Step 1: Learn the Basics Free on Fiber U

Start with Fiber U, the free online learning resource of The Fiber Optic Association (FOA). Its CFOT online training covers fiber optic technology, installation practices, testing and terminology. Complete it and keep your certificate of completion.

Step 2: Get Hands-On Training at an FOA-Approved School

Fiber work is a hands-on skill. Bring your Fiber U certificate to an FOA-approved school like The Fiber Optic Academy for a 2-day, instructor-led, hands-on CFOT course, where you will strip, cleave, terminate, splice and test real fiber.

Step 3: Earn Your CFOT Certification

After completing the practical training and meeting FOA eligibility requirements, you take the FOA CFOT exam. Students who pass and satisfy FOA requirements earn the Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification, the most widely recognized entry-level fiber credential. A Fiber U certificate of completion is not itself an FOA certification.

Step 4: Add Specialist Certifications

Once you hold a CFOT, specialist (CFOS) courses help you qualify for more advanced work:

Step 5: Gain Field Experience

Certification gets your foot in the door; field experience builds your career. Many new technicians start with fiber construction contractors, internet service providers, electric cooperatives or cabling companies.

How Long Does It Take?

Fiber U online study is self-paced. The hands-on CFOT course takes 2 days, including the FOA exam. Each specialist course takes 2 more days.

What Does It Cost?

Fiber U is free. Hands-on training at The Fiber Optic Academy is $299 per student, per training day, so the CFOT course is $598. See our fiber optic certification cost page for every course.

How Much Do Fiber Optic Technicians Make?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track fiber optic technicians separately. For the closest category, Telecommunications Line Installers and Repairers, BLS reported a median wage of $64,640 per year in May 2023. Pay varies widely by region, employer and experience. Source: BLS.

Is Fiber Optic Certification Worth It?

Certification is not legally required for most fiber jobs, but many employers ask for it because it documents your knowledge and hands-on skills. With broadband expansion programs funding fiber networks across the country, demand for trained technicians is strong, and a CFOT is a fast, affordable way to show what you can do.
